HUSTLE FOR JAZLYN: Warming Hearts Up during Typhoon Mina

Butta-Flava Entertainment and Pinoy Hiphoppaz Organization once again mounted this kind of event as inspired by the success of Baby Inigo's operation also in Taiwan just July of this year. The groups' first benefit-oriented event was Hustle for Inigo which was held last November 2010.

Jug Ramos , the leader of both groups, feels that this is the way the one above wants the Filipino Hiphop Community to give back. That's why despite the weather and the audience turn-out, she pursued the event for Jazlyn's welfare.

Jazlyn Mikaela C. Dumasal was born on December 11, 2009 to Joel and Bles Dumasal as the youngest in the family. Babies are usually jaundice at birth at least for 2 weeks before their normal skin surfaces but after a month, Jazlyn’s skin and eyes are yellowish. Her parents seeked pediatrician’s advice which was to do laboratory testing and ultrasound. Several tests were done and the result was Jazlyn has biliary atresia.

Biliary atresia is a serious but rare disease of the liver that affects newborn infants. It occurs in about one in 10,000 children and is more common in girls than in boys and in Asian and African-American newborns than in Caucasian newborns. The cause of biliary atresia is not known, and treatments are only partially successful. Biliary atresia is the most common reason for liver transplantation in children in the United States and most of the Western world.

The liver damage incurred from biliary atresia is caused by injury and loss (atresia) of the bile ducts that are responsible for draining bile from the liver. Bile is made by the liver and passes through the bile ducts and into the intestines where it helps digest food, fats, and cholesterol. The loss of bile ducts causes bile to remain in the liver. When bile builds up it can damage the liver, causing scarring and loss of liver tissue. Eventually the liver will not be able to work properly and cirrhosis will occur. Once the liver fails, a liver transplant becomes necessary. Biliary atresia can lead to liver failure and the need for liver transplant within the first 1 to 2 years of life.

Last July 2010, Jaz;yn’s parents were advised to have their precious one undergo liver transplant since the baby’s confinement earlier that year which lasted for one and a half month at just 2 months old. From then until now she always had her regular check up.  She’s now 1 year and 3 months old and still fighting with the disease.

The Campaigns so far...
  • T-Shirt Campaign: “I Saved 1 Life”  shirts are funded by my sister and we distributed it to our friends to sell. It was sold for P250 all sizes and P 200 for children size.
  • Save a Life Baller Band
  • Climb for Baby Jazlyn - The Voyager Adventure Club set a day hike event to raise funds for Baby Jaz’s liver transplant. Another life will be guaranteed saved with your help. These group of hikers also dedicated an event for baby Inigo who has now been successfully operated in Taiwan.
  • “Gimik for a Cause”
  • Jazlyn Cup Badminton Tournament - organized by Dennis Dumasal as their team’s first charity fund raising
  • Garage Sale and Individual Pledges from Relatives and Friends
Just a few more pesos and Jazlyn is off to Taiwan for liver transplant. That is why despite the heavy rains last Saturday, August 27, good natured and positive hiphop people gathered 'round A-Cue-Stick Bar and Billards to save baby Jazlyn's life by putting up this benefit concert for her urgently needed liver transplant operation in Taiwan.

Interviewed by GMA New  Janine Jug Ramos, the organizer of Hustle for Jazlyn said that there's supposed to be an event on November to help four Biliary Atresia babies but due to the urgency of Jazlyn's condition, Jug then decided to put up this separate event for her.

Bles Dumasal, Jazlyn's mother showed to the news team her baby's current condition and explained how far they've gone to reach the targeted price for operation as well as other expenses for their stay in Taiwan.

A Billiard Tournament for Jazlyn has also been put up while various hiphop artists sang/rapped for a cause.

Butta-Flava, Jug and Gazelle, started off the mic hype.
