The University of the Philippines College of Music (UPCM) has lined up a series of events to celebrate the holiday season.
On December 14, 2010, 6 P.M. sharp, the Christmas portion of George Frideric Handel's Messiah will be perfomed at the UP Abelardo Hall Auditorium by the country's most renowned choirs--the UP Madrigal Singers, UP Concert Chorus, UP Los Baños Chorale, UP AUIT Chamber Vocal Ensemble, and UP College of Music Chorus Classes--with faculty members of the College as soloists
such as Sherla Najera (soprano), Janet Sabas-Aracama (mezzo-soprano), and Rainier Cruz (bass). Armin Comon guests as tenor soloist. The UP Orchestra, with collaborating pianist Jourdann Petalver, provides the accompaniment with Raul C. Navarro conducting. In addition to Handel’s Messiah, which music has become the symbol for celebrating the season in the modern
globalized world, the concert also highlights the singing of local Filipino Christmas songs by each of the choirs, with community singing of carols that will be accompanied, in full, by the student symphonic orchestra.
The official lighting of the UP College of Music’s Christmas tree, to be spearheaded by the UP College of Music Student Council, follows the concert at the courtyard of Abelardo Hall. On this same venue the following day, December 15 at 5pm, the UP Jazz Ensemble, with music director Rayben Maigue, will perform appropriate music of the season.
Both concerts are free, although the December 14 concert would need tickets (free) that can be reserved in advance by visiting the UP College of Music Administration Office, located at the ground floor of the UPCM Annex, or by calling 9296963 or 9260026. No admission ticket is required for the December 15 outdoor jazz concert, which music will provide a festive sonic ambience to the landscape. This space will be filled with snack bars and booths selling souvenir items and trinkets, music books, CDs, and other music paraphernalia from December 14 to 17.
