Ballet Philippines (BP) opens its 41st Season in September with an exciting gala combining classical and contemporary dance with the theme of "The Hero's Journey: Our Mutual Quest. Epic stories of Love, Adventure and Redemption."
The September Gala, showing on the 3rd to the 5th of September at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Main Theater, features choreographer Alden Lunasin’s “Bungangsakit” (Fruit of Sorrow), a piece that tells the story of a woman shunned by her home town due to her appearance. The Gala also features Les Sylphides, Ballet Philippines’ tribute to Chopin’s birth bicentennial, and the winner of the First BP Choreographer’s Cup. The Manila Symphony Orchestra provides music for the performances.
Come October, Ballet Philippines will revive Jose Rizal’s prototypal first Filipino in Crisostomo Ibarra. This retelling of Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere strips bare the epic story and enters the psychological world of Noli’s protagonist, as he is buffeted by the cruel winds of his fate and yet strives to remain standing tall in his ideals. With choreography by BP’s Artistic Director Paul Alexander Morales and music by Jed Balsamo, history meets ballet in this contemporary re-telling of the novel that shaped a nation. “Crisostomo Ibarra” will run from October 15-17 at the CCP Little Theater.
Since its 1983 premiere, BP's “Peter Pan” has been a must-see Christmas tradition. Revisit the immortal story by James Barrie as told through dance, of the boy who would not grow up. See Peter Pan Flying with the Darling Children, Wendy, John and Michael as they meet Captain Hook, Smee, Tinkerbell, Tiger Lily, the Lost Boys and the other denizens of Never Never Land from December 2-5 and 10-12 at the CCP Main Theater.
Come 2011, Ballet Philippines will feature a new production of "Don Quixote", casting guest stars from the Australian Ballet. Since its first performance at the Bolshoi Theater in 1868, the dance version of Miguel Cervante's Don Quixote has become a beloved ballet staple performed by all the world's leading dance companies. Restaged by Noordin Jumalon after Marius Petipa and William Morgan, and with music by Leon Minkus performed by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Don Quixote will run from February 18-20, 2011, at the CCP Main Theater.
