The Yakan is a dance of the Mindanao ethnic group of the same name. The Yakan are the indigenous inhabitants of the island province of Basilan, and their hometown is in Lamitan. The Yakan women are known to be the finest weavers in the Philippines and entire Southeast Asia. The significance of the sea in the lives of these sea-faring folk is shown by the Yakan dancers' mimicry of the ocean's movements with sweeping arm motions.
