This dance which is heavily of Spanish influence originated from Calbayog, Samar. Old folks of Calbayog vividly recall that this jota is probably more than a century old. It is characterized by its flowing and regal costumes, aristocratic movements and Castilian music. It is a formal dance usually performed during special occasions and social gatherings in the presence of high government and church officials, the nobilities and the aristocrats.
This version of the jota is somewhat a blend of the jota and the favorite Curacha. In fact, the first figure of the dance is the palanat- the chase sequence of the curacha. Old folks of Calbayog presented the dance during the 1979 National Folk Dance Worshop at the CCP.
